𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐩 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬 Aside from the sheer importance of plain legibility, we need to read the notes on a survey map for a comprehensive understanding of it. The context and supplementary information given in the notes often carries a significance that can affect the interpretation and usefulness of the map itself. We encapsulate here some principal reasons why we need to read the notes. 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: The notes can include limitations or qualifications relating to the survey, such as the percentage of error, the projection used, or the areas that were not measured, estimated or just copied from another source. Ignoring these qualifications could lead to misinterpretations of the map, inappropriate use of the map, etc. 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Notes can include details on the method of producing the map, notably the equipment used to conduct the survey, the instruments used to collect data, particular adjustments or corrections that might have been made to the survey’s results, and the suitability for particular applications. 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬: Notes can show the surveys or other sources used in preparing the map, along with the dates when the surveys were conducted, or the map was last revised. This information is crucial for evaluating the map’s currency by helping to identify whether additional surveys have been conducted or if there are reasons to believe the map is out of date or otherwise needs revising. For a map-reader who takes the time to read and understand them, the notes on a survey map explain what is on the map and what is not, and how the map should be read and used, or misunderstood and abused. Maps that do not include these notes are likely to be used in error, allow decisions to be based on faulty assumptions, and lead to poor planning for expensive land uses.

🔍 As a surveyor, we can’t resist spotting unique markers even on vacation. 📸 Check out this gem my Field Party Chief, Ken, stumbled upon: a survey monument with the label “Vod-Ka.” Can anyone shed some light on this one? Is this in front of a famous watering hole? Perhaps the Czechs are onto something. #SurveyorLife #SurveyMonuments #Vod-KaPoint Location: Prague, Czech Republic
