Last Friday, I went to the Get Loud to Get Further #IWD breakfast, hosted by Katie Street Street and the Street Agency crew. And it was brilliant.
Instead of a panel or keynote, the stage was open to everyone in the room, turning it into a space for real conversations, shared experiences, and some seriously great advice.
Katie also shared some hard-hitting stats:
?? Female-led startups received less than 3% of venture funding last year.
?? Women hold just 29% of C-suite positions and 32% of senior roles in tech.
A reminder that there’s still a long way to go. And why speaking up, pushing forward, and making ourselves heard is so important.
So how do we push forward? Here are some of the standout advice from the room:
?? When in doubt, ask yourself: but what if it works?
?? Give more than you take.
?? Ask questions, make yourself memorable.
?? It’s ok to start small, don’t let the fear of perfection stop you.
?? Do something that scares you every day.
That last one really hit home. Speaking up at the event was a big step outside my comfort zone, and I’m glad I did it.
I shared a piece of advice that has stuck with me since I first heard it from the FD at an agency I worked at a few years ago:
? Don’t say no for them.
Women put so many barriers in front of ourselves. We overthink, we doubt, we talk ourselves out of opportunities before we’ve even given someone the chance to say yes.
So be it a new job, a promotion, a big opportunity, whatever it is, put yourself forward. Don’t take yourself out of the running before you’ve even tried.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve heard (or given) about making your voice heard?
Drop it in the comments, I’d love to hear it. ??
