Our staff and volunteers recently came together to celebrate Beyond the Basics Coordinator (and former Family Market Coordinator), Elexicia Carter, as she prepares for her upcoming wedding! With this exciting new chapter comes new opportunities, Elexicia will be leaving BPB, with her last day on October 18th. We are incredibly grateful for the 2.5 years she dedicated to launching not one, but two amazing programs—Family Market and Beyond the Basics. She will be deeply missed! Stepping into her role is our Program Director, Hope Strickland, who brings years of experience connecting community members to vital resources and is ready to seamlessly step in to lead Beyond the Basics. BackPack Beginnings’ mission is to deliver child-centric services to feed, comfort and clothe children in need. By ensuring food and basic necessities are given directly to children in need, we make a positive and lasting impact on their health and well-being. WHY WE DO IT BackPack Beginnings was established in 2010 in response to the growing needs of underprivileged children in our community. This year an estimated 41,000, over 56%, of children in our schools qualify for meal assistance and over 8,500 children experienced childhood trauma such as abuse, neglect, homelessness, or refugee resettlement in Guilford County. We are grateful for Tanger’s continued support of our work! It was wonderful having their team join us in the warehouse last week to assemble kid bags.
This month, I joined a group of Tanger team members in supporting BackPack Beginnings, a Greensboro charity that has been making a positive and lasting impact in our headquarters’ community for nearly 15 years. Together we stuffed several hundred “Kid Bags” with nutritious food and snacks for preschool and elementary school children in a collective effort to fight childhood hunger in our community. Consider Community First is a core value of Tanger. Last year, Tanger employees contributed over 6,500 volunteer hours, while our centers organized more than 100 events, drives and fundraisers to benefit their neighbors. The kindness and generosity of our team continues to inspire me every day.
