The average employer conducting a background check on job applicants will order the following information from their background screening company: (1) criminal history information, (2) employment verification, and (3) education verification. What is the most underutilized background check by employers? A social media check. Social media checks can provide exactly the type of penetrating insights into an individual's ability to be professional, get along with others, show positivity, handle adversity, and conform to rules that employers typically hope to get from the pre-hire process. While employers understandably worry that social media checks could expose them to protected class information (e.g., that the job applicant is a religious minority or has MS), experienced social media screening companies will filter out such information. In essence, employers will only see the "good stuff."
