Your brand is where you choose to be inefficient, an agency CEO once told me. The reminder comes to me as I think about what matters to us here at Backflip. After all, every business is in the business of being efficient - doing more with less, especially in the AI age. The landscape that a business operates in often frames that efficiency, and as a result, a company and their direct competitors can start to look ever more similar in the pursuit of savings, delivering growth, and improving customer experiences. It is in the small pockets not ruthlessly defined by ROI that each company’s identity actually lives. At Backflip, that is our Closing Dinners.??? Every other month in key markets, we host a celebration for our members who have recently closed a loan with Backflip, or successfully renovated & refi'd or sold a property and paid back their loan. It’s intimate: attendees number no more than a couple of dozen. It's quality: only closers are invited. I love to attend them, and go every time I can in Dallas. These Closing Dinners celebrate our members’ successes, but there is no agenda for these evenings. People are there to have a drink, eat good food, share stories, meet some like-minded Backflip members, maybe even connect with them on a future project. From Backflip’s perspective, often we’ll hear some feedback on a new feature or loan product we’ve just rolled out. But that’s just incidental, and it’s far from an efficient way to get that information. The real value is that people can walk in, drop their guard, and authentically connect. At every one of the dinners, the feeling I most experience is that strong sense of synergy in the room. The feeling of togetherness that we experience as we share our stories and break bread, that connects far deeper than a traditional business relationship — even among just those handful of members, just for a night. The work of value-add real estate is hard, and it deserves to be honored. As I often say at a dinner: “Tonight we relax, celebrating in our successes and learning from each other. Tomorrow - we get back to work.” If that feeling is the Backflip brand, to this CEO, it’s a worthy inefficiency!
