It was a special moment to meet Linda Jiang and the Lyft healthcare team in person at National Association of Medicaid Directors in Washington, D.C., the same city where we’ve been working together to address transportation insecurity for pregnant women. Deidre Winzy entered her 3rd pregnancy with a history of chronic hypertension. At 21 weeks, Deidre’s doctor decided she needed more regular monitoring via Babyscripts which helped them catch her dramatic BP spikes at 37 weeks. She went to Labor & Delivery with superimposed preeclampsia with severe features and after being given medication to manage her condition, she delivered a healthy baby girl. Unfortunately, Deidre's story is not unusual. 1 in 5 women will experience complications like hypertension or gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Black women can be especially vulnerable, whether it's due to their higher likelihood to live in maternity care deserts, be on Medicaid, or confront systemic bias when seeking treatment.
