Women who didn’t have risk factors going into pregnancy are experiencing maternal hypertension at higher rates than ever before, The Washington Post reports. The rates are even worse for BIPOC mothers. RPM for blood pressure is essential for managing the unique and critical demands of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy -- complications that disproportionately target minority women. By investing in RPM for HDP, we can improve patient outcomes and also create a more efficient, equitable healthcare system. What differentiates maternal hypertension from chronic hypertension? Well worth the listen ?? Valerie Rogers, senior director of government relations at HIMSS, offers her thoughts on making data work for maternal health equity: ?? Telehealth + RPM are key to improving outcomes at the community level ?? There needs to be greater access at the state level to digital self-monitoring tools for women. These tools should be available with no out of pocket cost to the patient. ?? Self-monitoring tools enable women to take charge of their own health. ?? Strengthening and supporting reimbursement of care is critical, from pre-conception through all phases of pregnancy through first year postpartum. ?? Integrated telehealth models for maternity care services enable new approaches to person-centered care.?

It was a special moment to meet Linda Jiang and the Lyft healthcare team in person at National Association of Medicaid Directors in Washington, D.C., the same city where we’ve been working together to address transportation insecurity for pregnant women. Over the past few months, Lyft provided almost 1,000 free rides to Babyscripts users, helping those who face challenges getting to their prenatal and postpartum appointments. It’s been a meaningful partnership focused on improving access to care for expectant mothers.

New reports from the United Health Foundation offer a look at trends in maternal health. Here are our key takeaways: ??Young women are experiencing poor maternal outcomes at higher rates than previous generations ??Rates of severe maternal morbidity (issues like eclampsia, hemorrhage) are increasing even as maternal mortality rates appear to be decreasing ???Poverty and housing insecurity are improving across the board, but stratifying by education and race/ethnicity shows that disparities persist ??More women (esp. younger women) report experience of mental distress, already the highest cause of maternal death. Deidre Winzy entered her 3rd pregnancy with a history of chronic hypertension. At 21 weeks, Deidre’s doctor decided she needed more regular monitoring via Babyscripts which helped them catch her dramatic BP spikes at 37 weeks. She went to Labor & Delivery with superimposed preeclampsia with severe features and after being given medication to manage her condition, she delivered a healthy baby girl. Unfortunately, Deidre's story is not unusual. 1 in 5 women will experience complications like hypertension or gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Black women can be especially vulnerable, whether it's due to their higher likelihood to live in maternity care deserts, be on Medicaid, or confront systemic bias when seeking treatment. Remote patient monitoring can remove some of these barriers and help close the divide. Anish Sebastian discusses the role of RPM in delivering better quality care to women, regardless of risk profile. https://hubs.li/Q02VK6w_0
