Californians have continued to lose access to labor and delivery services. This year, four hospitals have shut down their maternity wards, with another four slated to close by November. That’s nearly on par with the 10 maternity ward closures in 2023. Hospital administrators blame service cuts on high costs, labor shortages and declining birth rates. But in some instances, CalMatters found highly profitable hospitals closing maternity wards that delivered more than 700 babies annually, a number that research suggests is well above the threshold for safety and financial viability. The trend has drawn attention from lawmakers and health advocates who have asked Gov. Gavin Newsom to sign legislation intended to help the state intervene when a hospital is struggling to keep labor and delivery open. They also want to force hospitals to be more transparent about their finances, #staffing levels and how closures would impact communities. Innovative solutions can reduce hospitals need for closures. The surgeon general's report found that 41% of #parents are "so stressed they cannot function most days." Fifty percent said their #stress completely overwhelms them. Some of the many reasons for this new "pandemic" are: ?? These portrayals can lead new parents to compare themselves unfavorably to others, exacerbating feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. ?? Information Overload: While social media can be a valuable source of information and support, it can also lead to information overload. New parents might be bombarded with conflicting advice and opinions about parenting practices, creating confusion and anxiety about making the “right” choices for their child. ?? Pressure to Appear Perfect: The desire to present a polished image on social media can increase stress for new parents. They might feel pressured to portray an idealized version of their parenting experience, even if it doesn’t align with their reality. This pressure can make it harder for parents to seek genuine help and support. ?? Lack of Authentic Connection: Despite the connectivity social media offers, it can sometimes replace deeper, face-to-face interactions with more superficial exchanges. New parents might find themselves feeling more isolated as they compare their lives to the curated highlights of others, rather than receiving meaningful, in-person support from friends and family. ?? With over one in eight individuals experiencing disrespectful and harmful treatment, particularly those in marginalized groups, the findings are alarming. ?? Common forms of mistreatment include being ignored, shouted at, or coerced into unwanted treatment, indicating deep-rooted structural stigmas. This mistreatment not only undermines dignity but also leads to long-term psychological impacts and exacerbates maternal health disparities. ?? These insights highlight an urgent need for reforms that ensure respectful maternity care to safeguard the well-being of all birthing individuals. In a recent research conducted by Natalie Henrich et al., results show: ?? ?????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????????? ?????????????? ???????????? ?????????????????? ???????????? ?????????????????? were to (1) know what is normal or typical during pregnancy, (2) have access to a health care provider when needed, and (3) know how the baby is developing. Top reasons for postpartum use were to (1) help with breastfeeding, (2) know what normal baby development is, and (3) help with the baby’s health issues. ?? ?????? ???????????????? ???????????????? ???????????? ?????????????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????????? ???????????? were (1) credible and trustworthy information and providers, (2) nonjudgmental information and support, and (3) no cost to the user. In general, more reasons for using digital resources were identified as extremely important during pregnancy compared with postpartum.
