Across the United States, there are no uniform requirements for maternity hospitals to provide evidence-based information about breastfeeding, or to support mothers who choose to breastfeed. That’s why the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is so important — every Baby-Friendly facility supports mothers to initiate and maintain breastfeeding and manage common challenges, and they make sure all staff have the lactation skills and knowledge to help.
