For this Sunday Table Talk, we ask: what’s cooking? How about creating more mini-soul-nourishing moments—little exercises to weave into mealtimes with our loved ones. By noticing, sharing, and learning, we fuel our bodies, our Blackness, our connections, and our children’s sense of self-brilliance. ??? “Tasting the Power” brings mindfulness to each meal as we pause together, savoring the first bite, tasting each ingredient, spice, and love poured into the dish. Have each person at the table say a word that comes to mind –?whether it’s “strength,” “comfort,” “or “joy.” Show your kids that every meal is a reminder of the power and history behind each bite. ? ?? Set your “Little Chefs with Big Impact” up for success with a prep station where the kids can join in with stirring, sprinkle spices, or simply set the table. Give each task a purpose: “You’re in charge of adding love to this dish.” Teach them that cooking is a form of caring for their family, their community, and themselves.? ? ?? The “Future Roots” Family Recipe Booklet Project invites everyone to contribute to a shared book of beloved recipes, with a special memory or story attached to it. Over time, you’ll create a homemade cookbook filled with meals, memory, and a legacy of Black brilliance that lasts for generations. Now that’s soul food.

For everyone (raises hand) who starts their day with gratitude lists, this season full of appreciation, recognition, and family gatherings fills our hearts (and our plates). Stir up the “thank yous!” all month long in our Sunday Table Talk to cap the week. ???? Thank you power! Giving our thanks for something can be powerful and uplifting on the daily. Let’s get our kids into the gratitude habit. Gift them a small notebook or journal to decorate as a gratitude journal. Or start a family gratitude jar. ? ???? Grateful hands! In their new notebook, have your kids trace their hands on the first page. Inside each finger, like a thankful turkey, write down or draw things they’re grateful for. ? ???? Glad circles! Go around the table and have each person share one thing they appreciate about someone else. Encourage kids to see and speak on the brilliance they see in others—this builds empathy and a positive self-image. ? These simple activities teach our kids how to shout out the blessings around them.

Do you remember when, as a child, you really felt heard by an adult? A little life affirmer, this is a big deal for a small soul. Create a safe space for kids to speak their truth with this repeat-after-me that helps them navigate the world authentically and confidently. As one of our B is for Black Brilliance Community Members noted: “I love when I see the light bulbs come on in their minds and intellect. We’re helping them build self love and self advocacy.”

This Sunday, we gather ‘round the table to talk with our kids about the living legacy of the powerful stories of their elders. (That includes you—and any family members you want to invite!) Here are 3 ways to make legacy come alive: ? ??? Story circle! Invite elders to share a story about a challenge they faced growing up and how they overcame it. Encourage kids to ask questions and connect the lessons to their own lives, showing them the strength and resilience within their lineage. ??? Time capsule tales! Ask each elder to bring an item from their past—a photo, keepsake, or something meaningful—and share the story behind it. Let kids imagine what life was like then and what they would put in their own future time capsules, linking the past with their present brilliance. ? ??? Family timeline activity! Work together to create a timeline with stories shared by elders. This visual activity helps kids understand the history of their family and see how their ancestors’ brilliance and perseverance have shaped who they are today. ? Over Sunday dinner, dig into pride, understanding, and connection through storytelling. ??
