Originating from early German settlers to Pennsylvania, bank barn design combines practical functionality with a unique architectural approach: the barn is partially built into an embankment, creating a distinct separation between its two levels. The ingenuity of those early farmers and craftsmen has endured and spread, lending their creation’s practicality to equestrian structures and mixed-use facilities alike. This 10-stall horse barn and open-air arena needed to stand up to the extreme wind and rain that come with Florida's hurricane season. We reverse-engineered the timber structure to resist 55 lbs. per square foot wind uplift and protect the structure from hurricane winds greater than 120 miles per hour. Large overhangs shield the footing from becoming saturated with rain. When asked what it takes to build a structure that strong, our co-owner Daniel Glick answered: "A lot of planning, an experienced team, and more than 17,000 lbs. of stainless steel timber hardware." This rebuild of an early 1800s barn features more than 8,000 square feet of event space. The large, bright banquet hall/wedding venue holds 250 guests, with the rest of the facility rounded out by a bridal suite, a groom’s lounge, an hors d’oeuvres area, a caterer’s area, and restrooms. Douglas fir timber frames and a rebuilt existing stone gable heighten the interior’s Old World charm, while on the outside, a natural stone foundation is complemented by cedar board-and-batten siding, custom mahogany doors, and a standing seam metal roof.
