Always fun to sponsor local JUGs! Anyone in Tampa, check out the Tampa Java User Group.
Last Thursday we had quite a few presentations! Thanks again to our speakers, to all who came, and our sponsors: Codiac for the food, Azul for the cool JVM hat and lego Duke and JetBrains for the product license key. Also thanks to Embarc Collective for letting us use their cool venue as part of the scholarship.

Today I had a wonderful evening at OpenValue in #Utrecht, #Netherlands. They organized a #meetup with two sessions where one session was presented by ?? Artem Makarov who spoke about reverse engineering an abandoned #IoT (#Internet #of #Things) device. This session was absolutely fantastic esp. because I did a lot of IoT in the past and still have my pet projects today and Artem did a great job in explaining all the steps needed to reverse engineer the device, simply great ???? After his session and a short break I talked about #GarbageCollection in the #JVM (#Java #Virtual #Machine) again. For this session I had to modify my slides (again) because of yesterday’s release of #JDK24 (#Java #Development #Kit). With this release some things related to garbage collection changed in the JDK. First of all the non-generational version of #ZGC was removed from the #JDK and is no longer available and secondly the generational version of the #Shenandoah garbage collector was added as preview version. That means that now all available garbage collectors in the #OpenJDK project are generational which is great. Shenandoah was already a great garbage collector that is fully concurrent and can easily handle very large heaps with good performance but the generational version will probably be even faster than the non-generational version. Apart from that I‘ve also added some info to the ParallelOldGC which does a parallel collection not only in the young generation like the ParallelGC but also a parallel collection in the old generation which leads to higher throughput on multi-cpu machines. Again I also explained why #ZGC is more or less a cooy of Azul #C4 (#Continuous #Concurrent #Compacting #Collector) except a little difference in the generational version of #ZGC where they make use of a #WriteBarrier and where in #C4 (as everywhere) the #LVB (#Loaded #Value #Barrier) is used. As always at #OpenValue, the meetup was well organized and lots of fun. These people simply know how to do it…???? It was also great to meet Bert Jan Schrijver again in person. Visiting #OpenValue always means visiting #friends ?? Meetups at OpenValue are another example of the awesomeness of the #Java #community ??
