The FDA has a crucial opportunity to improve access to clozapine, a vital treatment for individuals with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. A recent advisory panel voted overwhelmingly to remove unnecessary regulatory barriers that currently limit patient access to this life-saving medication. Clozapine remains the only FDA-approved option for those who haven’t responded to other treatments, but the restrictive REMS program has made it difficult for patients to obtain. It's time for the FDA to follow through and remove these unnecessary obstacles, allowing more people to access the care they need. Selection Criteria: Nominees should embody APA values such as Compassion, Leadership, Community Service, Political Advocacy, Clinical Excellence, and Research. ?A Major Win for Mental Health Advocacy! ??? In a landmark decision, an FDA panel has voted overwhelmingly (14-1!) to reject restrictive provisions of the Clozapine REMS program that have been hindering access to this life-changing schizophrenia treatment. After hearing heartfelt testimonies from clinicians, patients, and caregivers, the panel recognized the need to prioritize patient access over unnecessary red tape. Clozapine, vital for individuals with treatment-resistant schizophrenia, is monitored for rare cases of neutropenia, a serious side effect. However, the FDA panel agreed that requiring prescribers and pharmacists to verify bloodwork before dispensing clozapine—and mandating training on neutropenia risks—adds hurdles without clear benefits. This decision underscores the power of advocacy in shaping equitable mental health care policies.
