Scratch that itch… or not? ?? Scratching an itch is usually a pleasurable sensation, suggesting some sort of biological benefit. To explore the cellular changes that occur when we scratch and how it relates to inflammation, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh conducted a series of itchy experiments using genetically modified mice. The study found that while scratching caused increased inflammation, it also stimulated a stronger immune response that helped the mice fight off a bacterial infection (Staphylococcus aureus). This suggests that scratching can be both harmful and helpful, pointing towards an evolutionary explanation for this behavior!
