In July I presented at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP)'s national conference in Philadelphia about trends affecting the trajectory of higher education. In addition to presenting, I loved learning from others' sessions and had the chance to reflect on that experience with Lee Gardner as he primarily wrote The Chronicle of Higher Education's new publication "Campus Housing for Tomorrow." He really captured my thoughts about the state of sustainability discourse at SCUP well: "I didn't hear a single human being say the word 'LEED,'" referring to the popular standard for rating the greenness of buildings. While Wilson, the sustainability director for Ayers Saint Gross, a design firm that works directly with colleges, didn't hear the term directly invoked, there was plenty of talk of carbon, greenhouse-gas emissions, and myriad other issues relating to sustainability. The discussion has evolved." Check out much more of The Chronicle's piece on the future of campus housing in the full report, available for purchase at the link below:

On Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, a new floating wetland by Ayers Saint Gross opens at the National Aquarium. The free exhibit will help clean the Chesapeake Bay’s waters and attract native species. “We think this approach can be replicated at many other compromised waterfronts to improve environmental health in urban conditions. It’s a great way of connecting people to water and educating the public about water and ecological issues.” — Amelle Schultz, ASLA, PLA.
