As you prepare those delicious Thanksgiving meals, don't forget to keep your hands safe! Here are some quick tips to avoid hand injuries while chopping, slicing, and dicing: 1. Use Sharp Knives: Believe it or not, dull knives cause more injuries! 2. Cut Away from Your Hand: Always slice away from your fingers to stay safe. 3. Take Breaks: Give your hands a rest to avoid overuse injuries. Enjoy your feast, and stay safe in the kitchen!

Emily's path into physical therapy was inspired by her mother’s career in the medical field and her own experiences growing up playing sports. Watching her teammates recover from injuries sparked her passion for helping people return to doing what they love. What does Emily love most about Axis? Flexibility and the close communication with the MDs of SCSM, ensuring timely and effective care for our patients. Fun fact: Emily is a true Charleston native, having grown up on Isle of Palms!? Emily’s best PT advice? "Put in the time to do your home exercise program—we can’t help you if you don’t help yourself!" When she’s not helping patients, Emily is cheering on her alma mater, Clemson—GO TIGERS! She also loves spending time outdoors with her two dogs, Harper and Knoxville, especially when it involves water activities like beach days, boating, and river floating.

Football season is in full swing! Make sure your hands and elbows stay in the game by following these tips to avoid common injuries: Warm-Up First: Proper stretches for your wrists, hands, and elbows can prevent strains and sprains. Strengthen Your Grip: Build up hand and forearm strength to support joints during impact. Wear Proper Gear: Use padded gloves and elbow guards to reduce the risk of injury. Practice Good Form: Use correct techniques when blocking, tackling, and catching to avoid unnecessary strain. Rest & Recover: Don’t overdo it! Give your body time to heal between practices and games. Chris Marino was first inspired by his uncle, a PT and chiropractor, who showed him the incredible impact of helping people recover and return to their daily routines without pain. At Axis, Chris loves the teamwork and collaboration that defines his clinic, ensuring that every patient receives the best care possible. Fun facts about Chris: He’s a soccer enthusiast and even played in Argentina! He’s passionate about the outdoors—hiking, camping, snowboarding, and mountain biking are his favorite activities. His go-to cuisine? Anything Mediterranean, especially Greek! Chris recently helped a competitive marathon swimmer return to her sport after a rotator cuff injury, showcasing his dedication to patient success. His best advice? Stay active! Even a 30-minute walk a few days a week can make a huge difference in your physical and mental health.

Kim Durst, PT, DPT, was recently featured in another Healthlinks Magazine's article titled: Grip Strength Can Indicate How Well You Are Aging: Get a Grip on Your Health. Here's an excerpt: Grip strength can herald risk for chronic disease and be a sign of longevity, as people with good grip strength tend to be healthier, age more slowly and have stronger immune systems to fend off disease and illness. Kim Durst, PT, DPT, clinical director of physical therapy Axis Hand and Physical Therapy, described grip strength as a reliable and validated way to gauge your health. “So it’s basically a good indicator of someone’s overall muscle strength and muscle mass,” noted Durst. “It’s quick and it’s easy.” The biggest thing is to keep moving,” Durst added. “Activity is the antithesis of aging.” Read the entire article here: https://lnkd.in/dRX9-kmP

"I initially became inspired to become a physical therapist while working at an internship in my local PT clinic in Clemson and knew right away that I wanted to be a part of it.??It combined my two favorite things: exercise and talking-- so I knew it would be a perfect fit for me.?I was further inspired by seeing the physical therapists work with patients in a TBI clinic and was amazed at what progress I saw in a short period of time and how it impacted those patients’ lives.?I danced for 15 years and then played basketball and ran hurdles and got my own fair share of injuries while in high school.?After I graduated from Furman University, I went on to finish the PT program at the Medical University of South Carolina. I have worked locally in outpatient orthopedics in Charleston for the past 19+ years." - Megan Graham
