Nearly two years ago, I wrote my first story about using a chatbot for therapy. Back then ChatGPT was brand new and Gemini was still called Bard. Since then the models have gotten smarter and some say more empathetic. But that depends on whether you believe robots have the capacity for empathy. Some people are excited about chatbots as therapists, friends or companions. Others aren’t convinced large language models can—or should—replace human connection.
