Day 2 of Pittcon 2025 – The Tradition Continues! As Pittcon Conference + Exposition 2025 is in full swing, it’s always great to hear stories from those who have been part of this conference for decades. Dr. Lee Polite has attended nearly every Pittcon since 1985—missing only one—and has taught GC and LC classes at almost all of them. That’s a level of dedication few can match! Pittcon has long been the place to see cutting-edge technology, reconnect with colleagues, and dive deep into the world of analytical chemistry. While the fundamentals remain constant, the equipment and techniques continue to evolve at a rapid pace. This year, Dr. Polite is keeping the tradition alive: ?? Inspiring the Next Generation of Food Scientists at Illinois Tech Yesterday, Dr. Lee Polite had the privilege of delivering a gas chromatography lecture to graduate students in the Food Science Department at Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech)—one of his favorite technical universities. Illinois Tech is well known for its contributions to architecture, home to the legacies of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Helmut Jahn, and it once housed the world’s largest scientific library. But today, the spotlight was on 35 bright graduate students eager to learn about chromatography and its critical role in food safety. One highlight of the talk? The Kool-Aid experiment, where Dr. Polite demonstrated how gas chromatography can separate the artificial colors from grape Kool-Aid. The students were engaged, stayed awake!, and many approached afterward with questions about internships and enrollment in the graduate-level chemistry class that Dr. Polite teaches at Illinois Tech each summer. Two students even said it was the best lecture they’ve ever attended—and that they’re now excited to learn more about chromatography! That’s the kind of enthusiasm that drives our mission to educate and inspire the next generation of scientists. I’m excited to be giving a guest lecture to graduate students at the Food Science and Nutrition Department, Illinois Tech where I’ll be diving into the fascinating world of Gas Chromatography (GC) and its impact on the food industry. ?? What I'll Cover: ? The fundamentals of GC—how it works and why it’s a critical tool ? How GC is used to detect pesticides in food and analyze flavors and fragrances ?
