Startups are hard! You’re chasing more funding, more customers, and more momentum, all the while chasing an ever-encroaching runway end date and mounting worries left and right. We dig that and can't get enough, really. It's kind of a problem if we're being honest. So we can help more startups, we're launching a new, one-time product offering: Deep Dive. Three hours to dig into your business' technology, product, and team to uncover new opportunities, red flags, warning signs, speed bumps and unrealized priorities. We've delivered a few of these already, and are excited to offer this to more startups. https://lnkd.in/g6V3fbNa

Founder, Axiomatic Consulting | Demystifying software engineering for founders and CEOs | Fractional C-Suite for B2B SaaS
“I am not busy. You might think I’m busy, but I’m not." I started almost every managerial relationship with some version of this, because I'd never want my team to think I'm "busy" or that they need to weigh the importance of something being worth bothering me about. Being explicit about this helps break down communication barriers and helps you avoid blind spots and surprises later. Things will bubble and fester before they cross the threshold for the team to break through your real or perceived "busy" to bring you in. I usually closed this initial chat with: “I want the people above me to think I’m busy, but not you. For you, I’m not busy, and you’re not bothering me.” More in this week's Axiom over at Axiomatic Consulting: https://lnkd.in/eQsDrX-B (Aside: This goes for you, too! You might think you'll be bothering me, but you're not. I spend my days refreshing feeds and inboxes just waiting for you to reach out. You got nothing to lose. Send that email.)

If you’re covering status updates in your 1:1 you’re wasting everybody’s time. 1:1s are for people, not projects and status - that stuff’s the literal definition of a meeting that could have been an email. And you have so much more valuable stuff to do! Like connect to another human being. More in this week’s Axiom over Axiomatic Consulting : https://lnkd.in/gvZVHvpd

Almost all business problems are actually communication problems. And most communication problems revolve around unstated expectations.
Drama is inevitable everywhere. The *only* antidote to drama is proactive, empathetic communication. Your company growth rate won’t save you from drama, nor will your density of talent & IQ. Only world-class communication will. Trouble is that most leaders past a certain level think they don’t need to improve *their* communication.

Excited to talk to folks about how the sausage gets made.

Spending the next couple of days at RALLY meeting new folks, talking tech, and trying to brighten the day bit with my trusty aloha shirt. Also rocking a vintage Indy Hackers tee, so throw a high five my way if you’re familiar. If I don’t find you, find me hanging in the back, the hallways, or the demo arena.

A key point in this: "Deadlines are agreements on how different organizations and departments work with one another. You agree to hit deadlines, and they agree not to bother you about it until the deadline becomes questionable."
Founder, Axiomatic Consulting | Demystifying software engineering for founders and CEOs | Fractional C-Suite for B2B SaaS
Software engineers work in a world where deadlines are often manipulated and malleable. So, when you're managing software engineers and you find a real deadline, you need to explicitly outline why this is a deadline that actually matters. Especially if it's going to take a monumental effort - like working through the weekend - to make the deadline. Because the completed code is not always the finish line, but the?starting?line for many other corners of the company. More on the blog ... https://lnkd.in/gsicCfUq
