Funded by a Federal Grant – A $1.44M NTIA Broadband Grant (awarded in 2022 via ConnectMaine) covered 90% of construction costs. ? For the love of connectivity! Can you imagine if there was no one to receive the hand-off here? I look at this photo (thank you Christopher Ross) and I think of the dozens if not hundreds of hand-offs and exchanges necessary to make this one happen. I also think about the dozens more that will be necessary to beam laser through that fiber optic cable to allow the children of the future to attend school, access the world, and make their friends jealous that they are on an island in #Maine. We need to connect with each other because we need each other to function - let alone thrive. There are a lot of ways that the internet does not bring out the best in humanity - but I am so grateful for the reminder here of how our basic humanity underpins the internet. I love that this picture makes me think of the all the people with the Isla Au Haut #Broadband Committee, Axiom , the Island Institute, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, Maine Connectivity Authority, Tilson, OnPoint Consultants and so many many more who worked to make this moment happen.

The Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program represents a crucial step toward closing the digital divide. Axiom, in partnership with the Maine Connectivity Authority is fully committed to leveraging this opportunity to bring reliable connectivity to underserved communities. Mark Ouellette, President of Axiom Technologies, shared: “We’re thrilled to have reached this significant milestone in the BEAD process. This funding will help us advance Axiom’s mission of delivering reliable broadband to rural, unserved locations in Washington County and other underserved areas across the state. Through Maine's BEAD Pre-Qualification Evaluation, MCA is happy to announce that fifteen prospective applicants have been pre-qualified after a thorough review confirming their capacity from an operational, technical, financial and compliance perspective. We are excited to work with the following pre-qualified applicants that represent Maine-based and national companies providing service through a variety of technologies. On November 10, 2024, the Isle au Haut project completed a major milestone in laying sub sea cable connecting the Isle au Haut community-owned network to the mainland through Stonington. Since 2018, the Isle Au Haut Broadband Committee has been planning for and working toward this achievement, receiving a $1.2 million award in 2022 from the State of Maine through the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Broadband Infrastructure Program. The (close to) final piece of bringing broadband to Isle Au Haut. The community worked for years to figure out how to get connected. Thanks to their persistent effort, it’s happening! Isle Au Haut Welcomes Broadband with its first subsea telecommunications cable earlier this week, bringing the long-term vision of access to universal broadband internet to this unbridged year-round island community for the very first time. The 10km submarine cable now connects Isle au Haut to Stonington on Deer Isle, which has terrestrial connections to the mainland. At the behest of the State of Maine, Axiom Technologies spearheaded the project and will provide services via the now-installed cable. Axiom commissioned Pioneer Consulting to provide key advice and connect the project to pivotal resources. Funding for this project came in the form of a $1.2M grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the State of Maine as part of a larger $28M grant.
