HIGHLIGHTING YOUR SWEET SPOT As a recruiter, the most important part of my job, and one that takes up a lot of my time is reviewing resumes. When I am searching for a candidate to fill an open position that I have, and finding the right candidate with the right skills to reach out to, it comes down to “Speed to Market”.?I am sure that all of you are familiar with this phrase and it is true in any position that needs to be filled. When I see a resume that shows the following; I will most likely skip over that resume: Example:?a resume with just the company name, job title and a one sentence that doesn’t tell me anything. Example:?a resume with the company name and dates of employment, no other information on the resume. These are examples of a resume that most recruiters will pass over.?When I am seeking a candidate for a position and looking for the skill sets that I need, I will not have the time to reach out and ask the candidate to explain in more detail, what they actually did at their job. A resume doesn’t need to be 10 pages long, 3-4 pages is sufficient for a recruiter or hiring manager to review. This is where your sweet spot comes in to play.?Create your resume with the skills that you have and use, putting in additional information is something that can be brought up if/when you get an interview. Hiring managers and recruiter want to see how your skills match up to what they are looking for and they need to see that on your resume. In today’s AI world, resumes can and will be reviewed by an automated system and that system will look for key words to match the position, if you don’t have them in your resume it will be rejected. Your sweet spot on your resume can get you to the next step in the process, that is where you will be able to promote yourself. Follow us on our LinkedIn company page. • CONFIDENCE OR ARROGANCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA As we are all aware, everything we put on any social media platform is there for anyone to see and read. And we all want to make ourselves stand-out or be unique when posting. ?What we write on social media can have a strong impact on how we are perceived. Writing that you are a tech guru in all things Java or React, can sometimes have a negative impact on the person who is reading it, especially if they are looking at you for a position.?You can look like you are arrogant or have an extremely high opinion of yourself.?There isn’t anything wrong with knowing that you are skilled in what you do, but when you are posting, keep in mind that other people who read your post will not think of you the same way you think of yourself if they don’t know you. Instead of saying “ I am a technical guru when it comes to Java, etc”.?Try saying something like: ?“I have extensive skills in Java through many years of experience and through constant training and re-defining my ability to perform at my best”.?This sentence will show that you have put in time and effort to learn and hone your skills and you are continuing to do so.?When reading this it will not come off as arrogance but as confidence and that you are always willing to continue to learn and grow. The same goes for posting your personal skills or likes,?no one wants to read that you like hamburgers, or that you are an expert in Dungeon and Dragons. When you want to highlight your personal likes and skills, be creative in what you say, instead of saying “I like hamburgers” try “I enjoy eating varied and unique foods.?Instead of saying I am an expert in Dungeon and Dragons, try saying; “I enjoy video games that help me improve my mind and allows me to examine how the system works which helps in learning new software skills. We all want to be noticed, but we don’t want to be noticed as someone who thinks they are better than anyone else.?That kind of notice will not get you very far in the process of searching for a job. • BACKGROUND CHECK/DRUG SCREEN.?BE OPEN ABOUT WHAT MAY BE FOUND As a recruiter I have conducted hundreds of background checks and drug screens.?Most of them were pretty easy and most of them came back clear. However, there were a few that required attention. ?When you are given an offer for employment, your recruiter will remind you that the company requires a background check and drug screen.?Depending on the type of company it is, they may also require a financial check, drivers license check, social security check as well as a few others. I know that sometimes it is difficult to expose any difficulties you may have had in the past and you hope that maybe they won’t show up in the background check, or drug screen. A typical background check will go back 10 years, most companies will want to check at the federal, state, county and city level.?Depending on how many places you have lived in the last 10 years the checks could go back even further. A drug screen will vary depending on the client, some clients will only require a 5 panel test, some a 7 panel and some a 10 panel test. If you have any past difficulties it is best to let your recruiter know about them before you accept a position.?This shows that you are being open and trustworthy and allows the recruiter to explain any discrepancies to the client. • DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOUR RECRUITER After all the interviews and phone calls are done and you have landed the position and you are ready to start on your new adventure, don’t forget about the recruiter who helped you and guided you through all of this. We can get caught up in the excitement of a new position and we should be, but we should also try and remember how we got there. Stay in touch with your recruiter, let them know how the job is going, let them know about any bumps in the road, more ofter than not they may be able to help smooth over those bumps. Your position is tenuous at the start and you have to prove yourself in your new position. Anything can happen, reduction in force, a lost contract for work, a change in management or a change in the structure. These are situations that you cannot control so a good idea is to stay in touch with your recruiter, you may need to reach back out to them sooner than you want to. A recruiter is not looking for praise, knowing that they helped you get started in your new career or helped you with your goal is enough, and staying in touch with them will only help you in the long run. • SALARY vs SKILLS vs GROWTH When you are searching for a new position, the most common requirement for just about everyone is the pay.?This does play a very important part of your search, but it shouldn’t be the most important one. You may think that what you have learned in your current position should allow you to ask for more money in a new position.?This can be true if you are making a lateral move, but if you are looking for something more challenging, then you should look at what your skills are compared to what a new position would require of you. Salaries are based on experience, the more experience you have, the higher salary you may be able to command. Although that seems fair, it isn’t always true.?Going into a new position at the top of the salary may be satisfying at first, but what happens after 6 months or 1 year.?You have already started at the top of the salary scale, where does your growth go from there. It is important to way your options, take a careful look at what you want to achieve in the long run.?Your growth in a company is directly dependent on how you adapt to new skills and excel at them.?If you start at the top and it is a place that you enjoy working at, what will your options be, stay where you are and be static, or move on to a new position to start all over again.?Your salary won’t go any higher, and you may end up with more responsibilities than what you were hired for. By opting for the lower salary and knowing that you will be learning new skills, you have no where to go but up.?Your training will be hands on, and free.?Your abilities will be seen by the people that matter and your salary will grow along with your new responsibilities. It is important to remember that money should not be the be all end all when making a decision about your future. For more informative blogs visit our website at: www.axiomsearchco.com

  • RESUME WORK STATUS As a recruiter, when I review a resume one of the first things that I need to know is the candidates work status.?By this I mean, are you eligible to work in the US for any employer. Clients will not always have the ability to stand for a sponsorship, and some clients will require US Citizen due to the nature of their work. To help eliminate this important step in the reviewing process and to help both the candidate and the recruiter, it is important to list your work status on your resume. In today’s market, diversity is important but it is also important to know the status before the process goes to far. Nothing is more frustrating to a candidate and a recruiter than to reach the point of where the candidate is a great fit, only to find out that the client is only looking for US Citizenship, or will not sponsor an H1-B. Your work status, should you feel comfortable adding it, should be just below your contact information. Example: Full Name Address Contact information Work status This extra step is important in the first process of reviewing resumes for a position that you are interested in. • WHY ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW POSITION Whether you are looking for a new position, or looking to advance within the company that you are at now, you will be asked “why are you looking for a new position”. This requires thought, you want to be able to express your reasons in a professional way so that the person you are talking to understands your reasons. You may be looking for a new position because you need to make more money.?While there is nothing wrong with wanting to make more money, make sure that your reasons go beyond just making more money. This kind of response will raise a red flag with hiring managers, the thought process for this would be “ what happens if I hire this person and a year from now decides that they need to make more money again, will they leave” Companies today invest in their employees with training and guidance and they do not want to think that the only reason this person is here is because we are paying them more than what they were making at their other job. You may want to change careers, a good reason to look for a new position and a good response, letting a hiring manager know that you want to increase your knowledge and skills and be part of a company that can give you that shows that you are willing to take the necessary steps to do that, sometimes this may mean that a cut in pay is required. You may like where you are working but want to improve your skills and by doing so you can contribute more to the company.?This shows that you want to invest your time and skills in the company and that you are willing to go beyond what is required of you. Whatever your reason is, make sure that you think about the reasons and that your response is professional and sincere. • FIRST DAY OF A NEW JOB For most of us, the first day on a new job can be worse than going to the Dentist. Whether it is a remote position or on-site, you want to be at your best.?You want to look your best whether it’s in person, or remote on a video call. If you are on a video call you want to make sure that your workspace is presentable and free of clutter.?What your manager sees in the video is a reflection of you and your work habits. During the video meeting, listen to what is being said, try not to interrupt a speaker.?If you are asked a question, answer with confidence, if you don’t know the answer, be honest but volunteer to find out the answer and get back to them. If you are working on-site, take lots of notes, ask questions that are relevant to what is being discussed. First impressions are the most important to everyone, you may be on a call with your manager as well as the rest of the team so besides impressing the manager you want to show your confidence to the rest of the team.?They are the ones that you will be working with the most. • THE IMPORTANCE OF FEEDBACK Whether you are a candidate or recruiter, feedback is an important part of the submittal/interview process. As a candidate, you are told that your resume has been submitted to the hiring manager for review.?As anyone is aware these days, hiring managers as well as recruiters wear many different hats. ?It is not uncommon for 2-3 days to go by and not hear back about your resume. It is acceptable to reach out to your recruiter to ask for feedback so that you can find out what you may be missing in your skill set or what you need to improve on.?Be professional in your request for feedback to your recruiter and don’t get frustrated if they don’t reply right away.?It is likely that they haven’t heard back from the hiring manager and getting as frustrated as you may be. As a recruiter, it is also acceptable to reach out to your account manager or if you have access to the hiring manager directly to ask about feedback on your submittals. ?Asking for feedback gives you the opportunity to talk about the candidates that you have submitted and to get more information from the hiring manager as to why a resume was rejected and also, as it happens very often, the job description and requirements may have changed or the position has been filled or put on hold.?Without asking for feedback you could be working on a position that is no longer viable, reaching out to candidates who may be an excellent fit, only to have to tell them that the position is filled, or on hold, etc. Feedback is one of the most important parts of the recruiting process and it should be addressed as soon as possible. ?As a recruiter, don’t leave your candidate ghosted, any feedback is better than no feedback As a candidate, feedback gives you the opportunity to adjust your resume for future positions.
