Today, POLITICO Germany, and thus the Berlin Playbook, celebrates its one-year anniversary. Over the past year, the Berlin Playbook newsletter has provided readers with daily updates on key political developments in the German capital. Complementing the newsletter, the Berlin Playbook podcast delivers an in-depth look at government affairs in just 15 minutes every morning, keeping politically engaged listeners informed. Since then, POLITICO Germany has expanded significantly, adding two pro-newsletters to its portfolio: “DC Decoded – Das US Briefing”, launched in September 2024, which analyzes U.S. politics and their impact on Europe, and “Brussels Decoded – Das Europa Briefing”, which provides insights into European political events and their influence on Germany. Yesterday, the supposed remains of four people abducted from Israel were returned to their homeland by Hamas. Among them, according to Hamas, were Shiri Bibas and her two young sons, Ariel and Kfir.? In response, WELT projected their photos onto the facade of our Berlin headquarters, the Axel Springer Tower, last night. However, Israeli authorities later confirmed that the body returned was not that of Shiri Bibas.? WELT Editor-in-Chief Dr. Jan Philipp Burgard: ?Since October 7, we have repeatedly reported on the kidnapped Bibas family. Now the world mourns Shiri Bibas and her young sons, Ariel and Kfir. We are stunned. And we feel overwhelming anger. The Hamas terrorists showed no mercy, not even to a mother and her little children, and in a diabolical display, even flaunted their coffins. Those in Germany who downplay or justify Islamism should look into the faces of the Bibas children. We must never forget, and we never will. Our photo installation is meant to ensure that.“ It has been more than a year since Hamas’s barbaric attack on Israel, which claimed the lives of more than 1,200 Israelis, including countless civilians, and led to the abduction of 251 people, taken as hostages into Gaza. To ensure their fates are not forgotten, we have not only dedicated extensive journalistic formats to the attack and its consequences, but have also repeatedly displayed video installations of the Israeli hostages at the Axel Springer Tower. Located in Berlin's former newspaper district, the site is deeply intertwined with Jewish history, German responsibility, and the devastating consequences of the Shoah. ___? ? #BringThemHomeNow #NeverAgainIsNow #Freedom #AxelSpringer Claudius Senst

“What do the war on Ukraine, the war on Israel, and the potential take-over of Taiwan have in common? They are all attacks on democracy.” This was one of the key themes our CEO Mathias D?pfner discussed in an interview with the Financial Times’ Gideon Rachman and Laura Pitel on an episode of the Rachman Review podcast. During their conversation, Mathias also explored key political and societal challenges across both sides of the Atlantic, among them: ?? The pressing global political challenges and the necessity of a strong transatlantic alliance to address them; ?? The evolving relationship between social media and journalism—and its implications for the future of independent reporting; ?? The potential risks of emerging technologies, like artificial intelligence, when concentrated in the hands of a few, particularly autocratic or totalitarian regimes.
