Axelar v1.2.1, code-name "Cobalt" is now live. This major upgrade hardens AXL tokenomics, securing infinite interop ?? ?? Governance-approved fee-burning mechanism ?? Token utility that grows with each new chain connection Following an on-chain governance vote, the upgrade to v1.2.1, "Cobalt,” was approved, implementing new AXL tokenomics that sends 98% of network gas fees to a burn address.?(The other 2% go to a community grant pool.) As the network has matured, this new upgrade hardens the AXL token supply to incentivize interoperability without inflationary rewards. Instead of incentivized inflation, newly connected blockchains contribute AXL into a reward pool used to compensate Verifiers that secure each new blockchain connection. AXL goes beyond proof-of-stake utility, becoming an integral part of a powerful decentralized interoperability scaling mechanism across thousands of connected blockchains.?All future blockchain integrations will be secured using Interchain Amplifier and this reward-pool mechanism. Today, Interop Labs and University of Waterloo announced a US $1M donation to the UWaterloo Computer Research endowment. The contribution supports Canada's top-ranked computer science school, home of the Institute of Quantum Computing, Waterloo Data & Artificial Intelligence Institute, the UWaterloo Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute and the?Institute for Quantum Computing – and alma mater of top blockchain entrepreneurs. The donation will support the creation of an open-source research lab, the GENESIS Lab ( Generative AI for Secure, Interconnected Systems) focused on scalable, secure, multi-tenant, heterogeneous distributed systems with applications in AI and blockchain technology. The University of Waterloo has a well-established history of producing advances in computer technology and an open-IP policy that turns researchers into entrepreneurs – part of why UWaterloo is a leader in graduating unicorn founders. Notable former students in the blockchain industry include Vitalik Buterin, co-creator of the Ethereum blockchain, and Liam Horne, former CEO of OP Labs PBC. The GENESIS Lab will offer 12 PhD fellowships to exceptional students and six undergraduate fellowships administered via the Waterloo Blockchain club. "Collaborations with industry leaders like Interop Labs, whose groundbreaking work on the Axelar network is shaping the blockchain sector, is the key to accelerating the global impact of the transformative research happening in the Cheriton School of Computer Science,” said Dr. Raouf Boutaba.
