In cooperation with the Axel Springer Freedom Foundation and the Mideast Freedom Forum Berlin, Frauen für Freiheit e. V. organized a briefing in the German parliament under the patronage of MP Renata Alt on human rights and security concerning #Iran and #Lebanon. In her introduction, Renata Alt reminded the audience of the human rights situation in Iran, in particular the WomenLifeFreedom movement and the continued lack of measures from the European side. Masih Alinejad, the prominent Iranian voice for women’s rights and dissidents, strengthened the need to list the IRGC as a terrorist organization and to provide a platform for dissidents in the West. Alinejad also pointed out that Nahid Taghavi, a German citizen, remains a hostage of the regime, as well as the body of the German Jamshid Sharmahd who was murdered by the regime in Teheran. “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. What happens in the Middle East does not stay in the Middle East” was Alinejad warning for European leaders. Ahmad Omeirate, specialist on Islamism, Organized Crime and Lebanon, followed by outlining the current situation in Lebanon, highlighting the influence of the regime in Iran in the country. He stressed the need to review the German aid provided to Lebanon, citing reports about weapons found at the airport in Beirut which is supposedly guarded by border control forces also financed by German taxpayer’s money. Omeirate emphasised the need to act now while the support for Hezbollah is dwindling. The resistance against the Iranian backed terrorist organization is visible since the fatal explosion in Beirut in 2020, strongly supported by Lebanese women. The diversity of Lebanese society offers an opportunity to turn the country back into the Switzerland of the Middle East. Faisal Saeed Al Mutar of the NGO Ideas Beyond Borders echoed Omeirate's comments, emphasizing the opportunity that the significant weakening of Hezbollah represents.? Al Mutar listed five measures that should be taken to help Lebanon now: Strengthen State Institutions, Support Independent Civil Society, Bolster Liberal Media Outlets, Strengthen the Private Sector, Implement Accountability in Aid Programs and Support Liberal Political Parties Especially accountability in aid programs is highly needed as al Mutar outlined the inefficiency of previous aid programs in detail. All in all, the situation in Iran and Lebanon provides European governments with the opportunity to establish a path to more security in the Middle East and thereby in Europe and strengthen democratic forces. Don’t miss it. For more information on the paper on the IRGC, please contact my colleague Ulrike Becker. Pictures by Kai Herschelmann
