Does Valentine’s Day feel like the opposite of the day of love for some of your patients this year? Yeah. It’s not just that things are dismal or bleak or that tensions are really high. It’s that they acutely feel the loss of rights being taken from them each day. It’s that they don’t feel they can be their true, authentic selves. It’s that they don’t feel like they can openly celebrate the day of love with the ones they love. It’s that they don’t feel that they can seek out and/or receive the healthcare they need to be healthy. Let this Valentine’s Day be a reminder to everyone in healthcare that creating safe, judgment-free spaces where people feel they can be honest is of the utmost importance. Perhaps now more than ever. All people—and we mean ALL PEOPLE, regardless of who they love—have the right to high quality, personalized healthcare. This often misquoted statement from MLK (we misquoted it last year!) is so important. Almost 60 years after he said this, we have come a long way, but still have such a long way to go.
