Useful info for anyone traveling with a UAS.

Excited to host Ohio Department of Transportation and the Air Force Research Lab/ DO this week and showcase the New York UAS Test Site capabilities. It was a great day of sharing information about New York and Ohio's BVLOS respective UAS and AAM corridors and discussed how we can collaborate on processes and tools that will be instrumental to DOT's effective use of UAS.

Yesterday, I joined an audience of United States Department of Defense and Federal Aviation Administration representatives who came together to witness yet another evolution of UAS: The enhanced situational awareness that results from combining the Air Force Research Laboratory‘s Collaborative Low altitude UAS Effort (#CLUE) with the FAA Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (#LAANC) within the MacDill AFB ATC Tower environment. What this means: DOD controllers, following USAF guidance, have enough information to confidently approve a KC-135 for landing while two separate UAS operations are simultaneously underway on the Base. “The SA we get from this set up is game changing for us” commented one of the controllers as we were receiving a pre brief before heading up to the tower. There is a lot to unpack here: commercial USS feeds, C-UAS feeds (#NINJA is onsite), connecting the installation ATC and security missions, radar feeds, fused 3D airspace volume and constraint displays, UAS airspace access approvals in minutes, improved fence line SA, and a mobile option for deployment. It was helpful for the FAA’s UAS Integration Office/Office of NextGen/Air Traffic Services&Mission Support/LAANC Program Manager/UTM Implementation Program Manager, AFWERX, Air Mobility Command, the DOD Policy Board on Federal Aviation (#PBFA), the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition & Sustainment and the United States Air Force Flight Standards Agency (#AFFSA) to observe how these different capabilities were being used together at MacDill and discuss the nuances that differentiate between the defense and commercial missions. Please remember this was a DOD demonstration. This combined set of capabilities isn’t feasible for FAA towers at this time. The complexities introduced into that environment may be a bridge too far for now. However, anytime the technology expands beyond its intended purpose we get to see another glimpse of future possibilities. Big congratulations to the multiple teams who’ve worked hard together for the last several years to bring this into reality!!! ????
