We are excited to announce three new hires: pictured left to right - Allie McCarthy, Cam Raymond and Astrid Wielens KENNEBUNK, Maine – April 2, 2025 – With recent hiring, Animal Welfare Society (AWS) has added three new members to its management team: Astrid Wielens, Cam Raymond and Allie McCarthy. Joining AWS in February as Director of Administration, Astrid Wielens brings nearly twenty years of non-profit management to the team. In her role, she will manage the finances, human resources, facilities and the business office. “AWS’ culture of empathy, compassion and inclusion drew me to this position. I am excited to have found another inspiring and rewarding mission to support,” Wielens states. Cam Raymond joins AWS as Director of Operations, “Drawing from my experience in veterinary medicine and companion animal diagnostics, I was attracted to AWS because of its unique mission and commitment to supporting the local community,” Raymond explains. “With my background, I can contribute to the organization's growth, support our staff and volunteers, and help serve our community members and clients.” At AWS, Cam will oversee the Community Veterinary Clinic, Adoption Center, Canine Training and animal services team. Rounding out AWS’ recent hires is Allie McCarthy as Community Engagement Manager. Allie brings nearly ten years of animal welfare experience to her role, most recently as a volunteer program manager at a central Maine animal shelter. At AWS, Allie will maintain the volunteer program, attend community events, engage with area schools and libraries and support AWS’ youth programming on-site and in the community. “Our new leadership team members are a welcomed addition as AWS continues to develop the programs and services needed by the pets and the people in our community,” says Executive Director Abigail Smith, “We’re excited for our future and are ready to keep growing.” To learn more about AWS’ community programs and services, and how these new hires support the organization’s mission, visit animalwelfaresociety.org

Founded in 1967, Animal Welfare Society (AWS) is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization located in Kennebunk, Maine. The organization provides shelter, veterinary care, training and resources to more than 10,000 pets and community members annually. AWS operates a progressive animal shelter and adoption center on a 40 acre campus in Kennebunk. The organization serves 18 municipalities in York County as the animal control impound facility for lost and abandoned pets. Furthermore, AWS works with rescue groups in other parts of the country to bring companion animals to Maine for adoption. By bringing together families through adoption and reuniting families whose pet has been lost, AWS is the community safety net for local pet families. AWS’ life-saving community programs help keep pets and their people together, especially in times of hardship. Resources include temporary boarding, pet food, supplies, veterinary care and assistance with behavior concerns. The on-site, full-service Community Veterinary Clinic supports the veterinary needs of resident pets and pets of local community members. Additionally, AWS works in collaboration with funding partners and veterinary professionals to deliver accessible spay/neuter and wellness services statewide, especially in remote, underserved areas of Maine. A compassionate and professional staff, a team of 200+ dedicated volunteers and 300+ foster families support AWS’ programs and services. AWS is able to fulfill its mission through the generosity of those who contribute through financial gifts, in-kind support and bequests.

We are hiring a new customer service representative for our Clinic! Do you love helping people and their pets? Do you have amazing customer service skills? Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment? Do you have experience as a customer service representative in a veterinary clinic? Then do we have a great job for you! The AWS Community Veterinary Clinic is a fast-paced practice that sees hundreds of clients a month, and offers high volume spay/neuter surgeries daily. As part of Animal Welfare Society’s nonprofit mission, the Clinic focuses on serving pet owners in our community who lack access to affordable vet care. Days are very busy, but very rewarding. In our Clinic, you are truly making a difference in the lives of pets and the people who love them. Customer service representatives keep our busy Clinic running smoothly through the following public-facing responsibilities: -Answering phones -Scheduling appointments -Checking clients and patients in and out -Staffing the reception desk -Processing payments -Responding to emails and voicemails -And much more!
