Partnering with Communities to Prevent Veteran Suicide

关于我们

Our mission is to partner with communities to prevent veteran suicide. Our programs accomplish this by starting at the community level and understanding the unique situations of veterans and their families. We connect local veteran-serving organizations with the appropriate resources, services, and partners that they need to support veterans, their families, and caregivers at every stage of veterans’ lives. Our ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for veterans and to end veteran suicide by empowering local communities to serve them proactively and holistically before a crisis occurs. Our upstream approach to veteran empowerment is a four-step plan to Connect, Educate, Advocate, and Collaborate with veterans, their families, and caregivers, and the communities that support them. Our ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for veterans and to end veteran suicide by empowering local communities to serve them proactively and holistically before a crisis occurs.

?? This Warrior Wednesday, we're saluting US Army veteran, Founder and CEO of Higher Recruitment, Inc. and AWP National Advisory Council Member, Brittany Ritchie Sievers. Brittany served in the U.S. Army for 10 years. She was an honor graduate at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School and the first female soldier fully integrated into the Green Beret Combined Leadership Training (CLT) course and the first female in Army history to complete the Special Forces Iron Man. Her military experience serves her well in the recruiting arena, as it was up to her to decide which soldiers were right for each job. Looking back, she recognizes that this was her first recruiting connection. She now utilizes that same military precision to excel as the Founder and CEO of Higher Recruitment, a recruiting agency based in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area that serves nationally and internationally. #WomensHistoryMonth

President and CEO at America's Warrior Partnership

Over the past two weeks, my colleague Cheree Tham and I traveled to Ukraine on behalf of America's Warrior Partnership to assist our client - SCM/Metinvest, the country’s largest company, in integrating the Community Integration Model for the demobilization and repatriation of thousands of employees who defended Ukraine against the Russian invasion. SCM has been deeply impacted by the war, with many employees, ore mines, and steel mills, including the Mariupol Steel Plant, located in Russian-occupied areas. The plant became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, where thousands perished, and 4,000 soldiers and civilians were taken prisoner. In response, SCM established Heart of Azovstal, a non-governmental organization dedicated to repatriating prisoners of war, supporting displaced families, coordinating aid for wounded veterans, and preparing for mass demobilization. Since the war began, approximately 45,000 Ukrainian service members have been killed, with another 57,000 experiencing amputations. As these veterans transition back into civilian life, Ukraine faces the challenge of reintegration in a society profoundly changed yet unified in its national identity. Throughout our trip, we encountered a passionate and hopeful veteran and civilian community, from Kyiv’s capital to Bucha—where a civilian massacre occurred—and Kamianske, an industrial city near Dnipro. Veterans share a universal bond, regardless of nationality, and Ukraine's veteran support ecosystem is growing, offering opportunities for collaboration. Communities like Bucha and Kamianske are proactively preparing for demobilization, committed to adapting to returning veterans rather than forcing veterans to adapt to them. Ukraine’s definition of a veteran includes individuals from six Ministries who have served in combat zones for at least 30 days. The Ministry of Veterans Affairs, established in 2014, remains under-resourced and relies on other government agencies for support. At local levels, various overlapping services exist for veterans and their families, underscoring the need for a customized, flexible approach to reintegration. As Ukraine moves forward, it must ensure a sustainable model that recognizes the sacrifices of its defenders while equipping them to contribute to a resilient, post-war society. • ?? This week, we salute Lt. Col. Charity Adams Earley, a trailblazer who shattered barriers for Black women in the military, education, and her community. Born in 1918, Earley’s love for learning led her to excel academically, graduating as valedictorian before attending Wilberforce University. She later became a teacher, but when WWII called for service, she answered—making history as the highest-ranking Black woman in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). At the time, the U.S. Army was still segregated, so she was placed in a company with fellow female African-American women officers and stationed at Fort Des Moines. In 1944, Earley was chosen to command the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first unit of Black women deployed overseas. Tasked with sorting years of backlogged mail for U.S. troops, her battalion worked tirelessly, clearing six months' worth of mail in just three months. For her leadership, she was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, the highest rank available to women in WAC at the time. After the war, Earley continued to serve her community—earning a master’s degree, working in education, and leading civic organizations. She founded the Black Leadership Development Program in Dayton to uplift future generations of Black leaders. Before her passing in 2002, the Smithsonian honored her for her groundbreaking service. Her legacy of resilience, excellence, and leadership lives on.
