Shifting the Language in the Metals Industry: From “Male-Dominated” to “Predominantly Male” Language plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions. In the metals industry, we’ve often heard it described as a "male-dominated industry" — a phrase that subtly emphasizes male control and legacy. But as the industry grows more inclusive, it may be time to adopt a different term: "predominantly male industry." This small change in wording better reflects the demographics without implying an exclusive culture, welcoming and supporting the increasing numbers of women who contribute to our field. While "male-dominated" suggests a sense of hierarchy or inaccessibility, "predominantly male" acknowledges the current reality without detracting from the efforts toward diversity. It emphasizes that, although the majority of the workforce may still be male, there’s room — and need — for diverse voices, talents, and perspectives. This shift in language aligns with the ongoing work to make the metals industry a welcoming place for everyone. It’s a small change, but one that signals an openness to the contributions of all genders in an evolving industry.
