?? Why Culturally Responsive Coaching Matters — Lessons from Michele Gelfand, cultural psychologist at Stanford University As Asian women coaches, many of us intuitively know that culture shapes how people show up, engage, and lead. But what if we could measure cultural dynamics and coach more strategically across them? Dr. Michele Gelfand introduces a powerful lens: the tight-loose continuum. Tight cultures (like Japan or Singapore) have strong norms and value order, structure, and conformity. Loose cultures (like Greece or Brazil) are more permissive, valuing flexibility, creativity, and risk-taking. In coaching, this matters deeply. A client from a tight culture may expect clearer guidance and feel uncomfortable with too much ambiguity. A client from a loose culture may thrive on experimentation but struggle with accountability. And we, as coaches, bring our own cultural orientations into the space—sometimes without realizing it. Dr. Gelfand also champions????????????????? ???????????????????????? (????)—the ability to recognize, understand, and adapt to different cultural norms. Unlike IQ or EQ, CQ is coachable. It starts with awareness and grows with intention. At the Asian Women Coaching Collective (AWCC), culturally responsive coaching isn't just a value—it’s a responsibility. Let’s continue learning how to honor our clients’ cultural contexts, avoid imposing our own, and create transformational spaces rooted in respect and relevance. ?? Want to grow your CQ? Start by reflecting on your own tight-loose tendencies—and ask your clients about theirs. You might be surprised what opens up. Listen to this podcast episode: The Future of Culture with Dr. Gelfand and Russ Altman to learn more. https://lnkd.in/gHKErht3 #AWCC #CulturallyResponsiveCoaching #CQ #TightLooseCulture #AsianWomenCoaches #LeadershipDevelopment
