We are looking for a Senior Backend Developer with at least 5 years of experience to join our small, collaborative, remote team. Are you interested in using your peer-to-peer skills to build tools for social and environmental justice? Then this role is for you. You will lead the backend implementation of new CoMapeo features and maintain and improve the peer-to-peer CoMapeo Core database. You will help build cutting-edge open-source mobile and desktop mapping apps for communities living in threatened territories to document, map, monitor, manage and report information on environmental and human rights issues around the world. In September 2024, Awana Digital convened a gathering that brought together more than 60 women from Krah?, Guajajara of Arariboia, and Guajajara of Carú Indigenous nations in Brazil, to share experiences and strengthen connections. During the gathering, the women formalized a group dedicated to protecting the Kraolandia Indigenous Territory, a highly biodiverse territory facing threats of deforestation for mono-agriculture, illegal logging, and mining. We are honored to be welcomed into their territories, and continue to plan further steps of collaboration where Indigenous women are at the center of strategies to defend the land. One of these steps is a second Indigenous Women's Gathering in Brazil, set to take place in 2025 on the land of the Guerreiras da Floresta! More than 100,000 Maasai People from Ngorongoro Conservation Area, in Tanzania, are living under threat of eviction, in the name of conservation. They have inhabited the area for centuries, living and moving their herds of cattle with the seasons, alongside the zebras, giraffes, lions and all other inhabitants of this biodiverse region. Losing access to land they care for is a significant threat to both Maasai culture and the biodiversity of their ancestral territories. We are working with our partners FINAL Governance, a community-based Maasai organization, to incorporate community mapping in their legal strategies to defend their land and rights.
