Slow to the game, but better late than never! Here are my key takeaways from an invigorating NY Climate Week #NYCW: ? Private capital is much needed to complement the billions coming from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund #GGRF. In particular, we need private investors to step in to support pre-development capital, bridge financing, and credit enhancement/guarantees to enable more clean energy deployment. ? VC / equity is not the only capital that will power early-stage startups innovating climate solutions. We need to unlock other types of capital, e.g., nondilutive grant or debt, to support the growth and scaling of these startups. Thank you Pedro Henriques da Silva and Breene Murphy for such an insightful panel bringing together like-minded climate change agents together for an evening of conversation. #ShiftingTrillions #SierraClubFoundation. And thank you Shruti Shah, Laura Fox, and Christina Whatley for taking time out of a packed NYCW to meet up and chat about everything climate.

Earlier this year, our team at Avivar Capital completed due diligence on Slauson Fund II on behalf of one of our clients, who participated in the final close. We were familiar with Slauson, as several of our clients invested in Slauson Fund I. Their thesis stood out for several reasons, but most notably due to their strong leadership and dynamic team. Congratulations to the entire Slauson team on today's exciting news. Austin Clements Ajay Relan Jesús Salas Waverly Middleton Brittany Crockett Aileen Kim Brandon Edler Miki Reynolds Clarissa Kim
VC firm Slauson & Co. has closed a $100 million Fund II, a big step up from its initial $75 million fund. “We invest in everybody,” Ajay Relan, partner at Slauson & Co., told TechCrunch, adding that the firm wants to make sure all perspectives are included in its products and services. Companies in its first portfolio include the e-commerce platform The Folklore Group and the food logistics company Prado. “We’re investing in a way that’s a bit more representative of the shifting demographics in this country.” Much has changed since Slauson & Co. partners Relan and Austin Clements launched their venture fund in 2020.?Fast-forward to today, Slauson & Co. remains?even more committed?to the mission of inclusivity in its funding, and it seems?limited partners have its back.?Read more about their raise below ???? https://lnkd.in/ed3buimj

Thank you to the pioneering speakers who joined me at #missioninvest2024 to talk about how we can continue to implement diverse manager strategies in an evolving landscape. Rochelle Witharana, CPA , Valerie Red-Horse Mohl, Erin Harkless Moore, CFA and Malik Murray highlighted the importance of: 1. Leaning into the backlash. Anti #DiversityEquityInclusion efforts like the lawsuit against Fearless Fund are intended to intimidate. We must push back with efforts like setting up legal defense funds and Diverse Investing Collective. 2. Interrogating the process. Commonly accepted due diligence practices are inherently biased against diverse managers. We can take alternative approaches to diligence that reduce bias while maintaining analytical rigor. 3. Changing the narrative. Data shows that diverse teams outperform homogenous teams. Seeking out diverse managers, who typically have more diverse teams, is a fiduciary responsibility in being a good steward of assets. Not doing so is simply negligent.
