Tony Merritt’s HIV-positive status was a chance discovery that took him on an almost four-decade journey through fear and loss to pride, advocacy, and a fierce commitment to a life well-lived. ? ? Knowing he is cared for without judgment about his HIV status or being a member of the LGBTQ+ community makes Tony, an AvitaCare Atlanta patient, more likely to talk openly about his sexual health and advocate for those who still live in fear. You’ll often see me using this channel as a microphone to amplify the importance of compassionate healthcare, and that’s no coincidence. Compassion is not only one of our core values at Avita, it’s also an essential ingredient in gaining the trust of communities who have been historically underserved, stigmatized, and discriminated against by those in positions of power.? ? While the article below is not new, I found it fascinating and well worth revisiting.? ? The author points out that “compete” and “competent” both stem from Latin’s “competere,” which means “to seek together, to come together, to agree.” Compassion, of course, also involves a joining together—it requires us to listen, hear, and act to ease the suffering of others.? ? What this means for the business world is summed up beautifully in this piece. “In a world where people climb over others to get ahead, success is most exhilarating when it is shared and achieved without causing harm to others,” the author says. “Compassion is anything but weak. It takes unflinching self-honesty to drop prejudice, hatred, and one’s reactivity. Business institutions can play a pivotal role in setting new cultural norms.”? ? #CompassionateCare? ? https://lnkd.in/gCSkVgaf?
