We’re honored to recognize Randall R., a third-generation Army Veteran and an inspiring member of our community. Raised in Edwardsville, IL, Randall enlisted in the Army at 19, serving as part of the Blackhawk 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment during the Vietnam War. His journey took him from the San Francisco Bay, under the Golden Gate Bridge, to a base camp in Pleiku, Vietnam, where he and his fellow soldiers faced the perils of war. In 1968, Randall’s helicopter, an AH-1, was shot down, and he sustained a critical injury, carrying an AK-47 bullet in his hip and lower spine. For his bravery, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Although his return home was met with hardship and misunderstanding, Randall found solace in reading and became a father figure to many young relatives.
