Nice thing about large microLED arrays for data transmission is that you can have redundancy. I am not sure we need it though. Here is all 288 modulated data channels of microLEDs on 16nm silicon for about 1Tb/s total bandwidth.

One of the challenges with silicon photonics is the complexity of the fiber attach. Lots of single mode fibers, all of which need to be precisely aligned to sub-micron positions ultimately affects costs and impacts yield. MicroLED based LightBundle, on the other hand, where hundreds of low cost illumination fibers are connected simultaneously with low precision is much easier. To prove the point, at the European Conference on Optical Communications next week, we will be doing a demo with Legos -our standard 1mm diameter 331 fiber cable for 1Tb/s link with a connector assembled using standard Lego pieces! Come see it for yourself and play with Legos in Frankfurt next week.
