Congratulations to Dr. Jan Scarlett on being awarded the prestigious 2025 Calvin W. Schwabe Award by the Association for Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine! This award recognizes a lifetime of remarkable contributions to veterinary epidemiology and preventive medicine. Dr. Scarlett, from Cornell University, has been a leader in advancing epidemiological research, particularly in companion animal welfare. Her dedication to this field has positively impacted countless animals and the broader veterinary community. As part of the Schwabe Symposium, Dr. Scarlett delivered an inspiring presentation, “Challenges to Conducting Epidemiologic Research Regarding Companion Animal Welfare,” alongside a panel of accomplished speakers who brought their unique insights to the complex issues of animal health and welfare: Dr. Alexandra Protopopova, PhD, CAAB (University of British Columbia): “The Use of Mixed Methods to Explore the Complex Issue of Companion Animal Relinquishment to and Adoption from Animal Shelters” Dr. Margaret Slater, DVM, PhD (ASPCA): “Illuminating the Welfare Implications of Free-Roaming Unowned Cats Via Epidemiological Approaches” Dr. Rachael Kreisler, VMD, MSCE, DACVPM (Epi), VMD, MSCE, DACVPM (Midwestern University): “Epidemiological Insights: Classic Tools for Modern Animal Shelter and Community Animal Health Research” Dr. Scarlett now joins a distinguished list of past Schwabe Award recipients, including trailblazers like Drs. Calvin W. Schwabe, Ian R. Dohoo, Jan Sargeant, and many others who have shaped the field of veterinary epidemiology. ?? Celebrating a Successful AVEPM Student Networking Event! ?? Last weekend, the AVEPM Student Networking Event exceeded all expectations, thanks to the incredible efforts of everyone involved! The evening was all about connecting students with the many opportunities within veterinary epidemiology and preventive medicine, and the energy in the room was inspiring. We owe a huge thank-you to our outstanding panelists, who shared their diverse experiences and invaluable advice: -Dr. Audrey Ruple (Virginia Tech) -Dr. Csaba Varga DVM PhD DACVPM (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) -Dr. Lee Cohnstaedt (USDA) -Dr. Jason Nickell, DVM, PhD, DACVPM (Merck Animal Health) Your insights on navigating careers in academia, government, and industry were truly enlightening and impactful. A heartfelt shoutout goes to our student board members—Sara Sequeira, Alaina Macdonald, and Taylor McAtee —for leading the charge on this initiative, as well as Ashley Thackrah, whose behind-the-scenes efforts were pivotal in bringing this event to life. Your hard work and dedication ensured this evening’s success! From our engaging panel discussion to the fun "Find Someone Who" Bingo activity, it was amazing to see so many students connecting, learning, and building relationships. Whether it was finding someone who has worked with surveillance data, published a peer-reviewed paper, or presented at CRWAD, the networking energy was unmatched. We wrapped up the evening with a reminder about AVEPM’s Journal Club, a great opportunity to dive deeper into veterinary epidemiology through article discussions and special topics. Congratulations to Lucas Horton, the 2025 Mark Gearhart Memorial Graduate Student Award Recipient! We are thrilled to announce that Lucas Horton has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious Mark Gearhart Memorial Graduate Student Award for 2025! This award recognizes graduate students who demonstrate excellence in veterinary epidemiology, public health, or preventive medicine. Lucas was chosen from an outstanding pool of applicants for his exceptional contributions to our field. He will present his paper, "Stochastic modeling of economic risk and net return distributions for feedlot steers marketed at alternative endpoints," following the Schwabe Symposium at the 2025 CRWAD Annual Meeting in Chicago.
