North Senior Kyle is a future electrician, and he will be graduating this coming May! Through Avenue Scholars he's had the opportunity to explore skilled trades through business visits, career fairs, and a summer internship at McAninch Corp. He has the second highest attendance in the senior cohort and holds a 3.31 GPA! Sahira graduated from Roosevelt High School and then pursued her BA in Family Services at UNI. She then continued her education to obtain her Master of Arts in Post Secondary Education: Student Affairs from the University of Northern Iowa. She served as a Program Coordinator for Iowa State’s Multicultural Vision Program, where she led programming and academic intervention initiatives for over 350 first-generation scholarship recipients. Being a first-generation student herself, college was not an easy transition. She quickly got involved in many student organizations which led her to discover her passion, which is helping students navigate college despite the adversities students like herself may encounter. She finds joy in connecting with young scholars, finding ways to help students achieve their educational and lifelong goals. "I believe the most important thing an advisor can do is provide a safe space for students so they can truly be themselves. My advisors always made me feel cared for outside of the classroom setting. Now being on the other side, it is fulfilling to learn from the students as much as they learn from us." Outside of the office, Sahira enjoys spending time with family and friends. She also enjoys trying new foods, traveling, working out, and reading a good book!

Ray from Aureon stopped by yesterday to present a BIG check to invest in our scholars! North Senior Angelique and her family are originally from Puerto Rico and she will be graduating this coming May. Through Avenue Scholars she's had the opportunity to explore Health Sciences and Business. After a year of deep exploration, business visits, applying for jobs, and classroom learning she landed on business. This led to her earning a spot with MidAmerican Energy Company 2024 summer internship and then was asked back second semester of her senior year. Did you know? Hy-Vee, Inc. has a Helpful Smiles Technology Center in Grimes. Yesterday, a group of our scholars interested in business and technology were invited to visit the innovative center. They learned about the behind-the-scenes technology and marketing that supports Hy-Vee’s retail stores and other subsidiary businesses. Students enjoyed hearing from a panel of team members about their career paths and the various career opportunities Hy-Vee offers.
