This time offers us a chance to raise awareness about the disease and encourage those with symptoms to seek medical advice for treatment and support. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as GERD, is a condition in which stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the esophagus, causing discomfort and irritation. Symptoms include heartburn, chest pain, trouble swallowing, and the sensation of a lump in your throat. GERD is very common in the U.S. and can be treated by a medical professional.
