‘AI in the physical world' has the potential to impact 300B+ connected devices across the globe.?This was the theme of our roundtable and it was a pleasure to host passionate entrepreneurs across Robotics, Industrial IoT, and Quantum computing at our Bangalore office last week. The deep and insightful discussion unlocked several fresh perspectives of scaling a Physical AI startup. Here are a few key takeaways: ???Going full-stack is the recipe for success: A combination of off-the-shelf hardware + specialized assembly + use-case-focused software and services gives younger startups the right to win against incumbents. ???India advantages exist, but not without challenges: India's strength exists in its young engineering talent and its software+services capabilities. There is some work ahead to address our supply chain issues (e.g., availability, quality, and consistency of raw materials). ???Pick your early customers wisely: Instead of the largest brand name in your TAM, go after smaller customers that have the exact pain point you solve. These customers are often actively engaged with you in your product iterations and can help massively. This might mean more No than Yes responses early on. ???Find the right mix of engineering talent: Enterprises need not only focus on the bleeding-edge tech innovation (the realm of research scientists, PhDs) but also have enterprise attributes like reliability, safety, and compliance (the realm of application and specialist engineers). Swaying too hard in one direction can lead to slower product velocity, adoption challenges, and talent attrition. ???Early sales team = early product team: Your first 5-10 customers are won based on your product's ability to solve their pain point. Going all-in on an 'enterprise GTM' team can follow later. ???Innovating monetization to address technical risk: Different approaches, e.g., paid pilots, charging only NRE until go-live, and pre-agreed customer acceptance criteria. We're confident that we will see some consequential companies coming out in the Physical AI world from the startups gathered in the room.
