The End of the Beginning This past Saturday night, the Altadena and Palisades Community Funds came together to host a meal. In the two months since the fires ravaged neighborhoods across Southern California, I think we’ve all gone through our stages of grief. The anger and loss and pain so many of us have felt, the hopelessness in the face of an unknowing, uncaring wall of flame - with time, as has happened since time immemorial, we’ve finally come to acceptance. This happened to our communities, it cannot and will not be undone, and so the only way out is through. As this event evolved and took shape, all of us who spent so much of ourselves in this effort - Kate Fishel, Paul Fuhrman, Sam Bakhshandehpour, Mickey Segal, Carolyna De Laurentiis, Kim Alves, Lauren Renschler, Victoria White, Jim Dillavou, Lindsay Petersen, Andrew Kirsh, Donna Mayer, Arik Prawer and so, so many more - found ourselves continually drawn to the concept of “impacted and impactful people.” The hands to feed and the mouths to be fed. On the field of the Rose Bowl Saturday night, we had a nourishing moment for these communities. I wish I could tell you every story - the old and new friends and neighbors who cried together and laughed for the first time in months, the brilliant chefs from across the region who poured themselves onto our plates, the firewomen and men who sat down and leaned back for the first time in weeks and allowed us to serve THEM by saying thank you with a meal. You cannot refill a glass from an empty pitcher and I know a number of us went home Saturday night a little bit more full. We also forged meaningful connections and broke through on some important concessions that we hope to have an update on in the month ahead. Now, we are excited to pivot to the path forward. Our ambition is to be back out shortly with the inaugural boards for these two funds thanks to the tireless efforts of Tracy Lawrence and Trevor Fay and the brilliant advice of community leaders like Nancy Berglass and Ron Frierson.
