Just wrapped up my latest piece on how David O. Sacks' appointment as AI czar could reshape medical AI innovation in the U.S. Had the pleasure of virtually meeting and chatting with Avandra Imaging CEO Ryan Tarzy whom I quoted throughout this article who shared how, for instance, a deep learning system can now detect pancreatic cancer under 2 cm (sometimes at 1 cm) in Taiwan, while U.S. detection typically happens at 2cm+ when survival rates plummet. Tarzy notes that current FDA rules create a catch-22: we need U.S. data to approve these tools, but we can't get early detection data without them. Sacks' appointment points to a shift towards more business-friendly regulations in the AI and cryptocurrency sectors, establishing the U.S. as a global leader in these fields. This insight could help break the regulatory logjam in healthcare, where we're still burning CDs for image sharing while being, in some respects, multiple technological generations behind other industries in terms of tech adoption.
