HR 9495 could redefine the landscape for nonprofits. Congress, with support from the incoming Trump Administration, is considering a bill that would give the Treasury Department unprecedented power to revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofits—including social justice groups, media organizations, universities, and civil liberties organizations—based on accusations without due process. This controversial measure is attached to a widely supported bill that protects American hostages from IRS penalties for unpaid taxes, making it more likely to pass.
