A newly reintroduced California bill could shift the cost of EV battery lifecycle management to battery suppliers. SB 615, brought forward by State Sen. Ben Allen, aims to ensure EV traction batteries are reused, repaired, repurposed, remanufactured, and eventually recycled—while requiring suppliers to cover associated regulatory costs. The bill, similar to one vetoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom last year, is now set for its first committee hearing on April 2. If passed, it would also impact transaction reporting protocols and establish a Vehicle Traction Battery Fund. Industry stakeholders, including collision repair shops, may be affected by requirements for battery removal and disposal.
