In December, 2023, there were three new major vehicle recalls affecting 2 million Teslas, 1 million Toyotas and 2.5 million Hondas. Combined, they accounted for about 15% of all vehicles recalled in 2023. These high-volume, high-profile recalls underscore an important point that we’ve been sharing with our automotive retail clients for the past several years: Automotive recalls are not going away. In fact, they are becoming more prevalent as manufacturers continue to add more safety-related systems and advanced technologies to new models. More technology = more recalls. What does this mean for?#autodealers? They should continue to be vigilant when it comes to identifying vehicles with open recalls. The millions of vehicles with recalls today will continue to cycle through dealers’ lots and unrepaired recalls can slip through the cracks – through no fault of the dealer. It sets up dealers for significant risk of potentially costly liability and damage to customer satisfaction as well as missed revenue opportunities for in-brand recalls that could have been repaired! On average, about 15% to 20% of a dealer’s inventory has an open recall. But, for AutoAp, Inc.’s “power users” (those that actively manage recall information while vehicles are in their possession), that rate drops to 2.5%, which are largely recalls that the OEM has yet to release a remedy for. How do they do it? There are four important first steps: 1. Commit to proactively to dealing with open recalls Managing recalls properly needs to be a cultural priority for all dealers, starting with buy-in from dealer principals and upper-level managers. 2. Assign one person to ‘own’ recalls Assigning one person to own recalls ensures that the dealer’s interest is protected and staff understand the importance. This provides leadership and accountability. 3. Develop a written policy Dealership organizations who develop written policies outlining how and why recalls should be handled properly have far lower liability than those trying to ‘wing it’. 4. Automate, using a multisource solution (hint: that’s AutoAp!) Checking every vehicle against every available resource every day is impossible for a dealership to do manually. Automating these processes is the key to successfully identifying which vehicles have open recalls. Our dealer clients who implement these processes limit liability, drive additional revenue and form better customer relationships. Want to learn more? Stop by Booth?#6513N?at?#NADA2024.
