Autism is more likely to be diagnosed in males compared to females. This can be due to many factors, including biological differences. A recent study in Korea demonstrated that intellectual disability (IDD) and autism severity influence this ratio, with females more likely to show intellectual disability and rare genetic variants associated with ASD. Scientists need to account for things like IDD and symptom severity to better understand females, and we need more females to participate in research. Open access here: https://lnkd.in/eaDSf_5V

How often do comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions run in autism families? Thanks to a project led by @AJDrexelAutismInstitute and @aarhus_university in Denmark studying 1.7 million children, researchers showed the high heritability of autism as well as mental health conditions in families. The article is #openaccess, and the researchers have also designed a data portal so anyone can log on and see these relationships across 3 generations of family members.
