Have you ever felt like you just can’t seem to get beyond the small talk at networking events? At these events, it is crucial to leverage the power of a personal connection - not a shallow one. Here's a few tips on what to do when you feel stuck in the small talk: Establish connection A great way to do this is by self-disclosing an authentic truth about ourselves with others. These truths can be superficial or more personal, but in any case, they'll lay the foundation for building a connection. Be interested! When networking, it’s important to be engaged and ask open-ended questions about the other person to show you're interested in what they have to say. Invite elaboration By inviting elaboration, your new connection is able to dig deeper so you can go beyond their job title and name. Are you giving your attention... or just paying it? As leaders, paying attention implies we "have" to. "Giving" our attention means we "get" to. It sends the message that we care about our team members as individual people - not just a peg in the spoke of a wheel we're churning. Ron Heifetz, Founding Director of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard says, “Attention is the currency of leadership.” What does attention look like? - Stopping other activities - Avoiding distractions - Maintaining eye contact - Body turned toward the speaker - Mirroring These are all signs that we're listening with focus and intent. Try putting these in practice in your work encounters and see how it affects your work relationships.
