Further strengthening our Australia-India space partnership is today’s signing of the Implementing Arrangement between the Australian Space Agency and the ISRO - Indian Space Research Organization relating to Cooperation on Crew and Crew Module Recovery for India’s Gaganyaan Human Space Flight missions. The objective of these missions is to demonstrate human space flight capability to Low Earth Orbit in an Indian Crew Module carrying up to three crew members for up to three days and safely recovering them after the mission. Should any of the uncrewed or crewed missions need to be aborted following launch from India, the Crew Module is likely to land in the Southern Ocean, in Australian waters. The Australian Government has agreed to work with Indian authorities to ensure the safe recovery of the Gaganyaan crew module and support crew search and rescue activity. Australia and India are enduring strategic partners with both agencies committed to exploring current and future collaboration and opportunities. By working together in space we not only strengthen our relationship but deliver outcomes that benefit the region more broadly. Read more: https://lnkd.in/grGDw8NP

We got a visit from some young rock(et) stars earlier this week ?? After placing second in their class at the 2024 Spaceport America Cup (SAC), engineering students Neel Pawar, Lachlan Miegel, and Simon Le (L-R) from the University of Melbourne's ARES Rocketry Team stopped by the Australian Space Discovery Centre with Florence, their competition rocket. Over 150 teams from 20 countries headed to New Mexico in June to take part in the SAC, which is the world’s biggest intercollegiate rocket engineering competition. Students are challenged to design, build, and launch rockets to target altitudes of 10,000 or 30,000 feet. Florence (named after Florence Violet McKenzie, Australia’s first female electrical engineer) reached an apogee of 29,782 feet – within 0.73% of the team’s target – and hit a top speed of around 2200 km/h. “It’s using a solid rocket motor – there’s no controlling the actual burn of the motor, so the only way to control it is with aerodynamics… we have airbrakes that can go in and out, and using those, we can make sure the rocket gets to the height,” team leader Neel told us. “We launched it one day, ended up getting stuck out in a windstorm, and had to go back the next day. About 15 kilometres of four-wheel-driving in the desert in New Mexico, and we ended up finding it. One of our members was downlinking all the data, they waited until we were all there, and we all heard the results – and we all started jumping up and down.” “We’ve had some failures in the past, or some areas to improve on… the main goal is addressing those areas to build the most robust rocket possible, and build a team that can build good rockets. Getting those results and coming second in our category was really just the cherry on top.” ?? 2 - Jim Wilkerson | 3 & 4 - ARES
