Kicking off our category highlights with the finalists for the Mentor of the Year category! Alison Walgren is a Principal at Deloitte with 30 years in IT, consulting, and client support. She leads 2,200 professionals across Consulting, Attest, Risk Advisory, and Tax in Austin and San Antonio. Her global work spans financial services, consumer, and life sciences. She leads transformations that help clients achieve truly lasting improvements. Dr. Jay L. McCullar, Ed.D is a professor, community leader, and Founder/CEO of J-4 Education Consulting. He’s led initiatives like My Brother’s Keeper Scholars and created Louise’s Kids to honor his grandmother’s legacy. A 2024 African-American Leadership Institute Fellow, Dr. Jay inspires through mentorship, equity advocacy, and “heart work.” Lourdes G. Zuniga is a global humanitarian and a Presidential Leadership Scholar. As a UNICEF ambassador Lourdes advocates for Economic Justice and fights the criminalization of poverty. A journalist from Peru, she moved to the US with no English and worked as a prep cook. Her journey to becoming an influential community leader has been remarkable. Matt Curtis is a former Deputy to two Austin mayors, a former Austin Under 40 Austinite of the Year, and a dedicated community servant who focuses on providing mentorship opportunities while helping local governments work best with community needs. Trennis Jones serves as Vice President - Community Impact for Austin FC, the first major sports team in Austin, TX, a city he was born and raised in. With his experiences as an athlete at CU-Boulder and through 25+ years as a Sports Executive, he is passionate about using the power of sport to empower people who enrich our community.

Since 1998, the Young Men’s Business League has hosted a series of events culminating in the Austin Under 40 Awards Gala—a black-tie event honoring and celebrating Austin’s emerging professionals and their mentors. These individuals are recognized in categories including: Architecture, Engineering and Construction; Arts and Entertainment; Civics, Government, and Public Affairs; Culinary Arts, Events, and Hospitality; Energy, Mobility and Transportation; Financial and Insurance Services; Innovation and Start up; Journalism, Marketing, and Public Relations; Legal; Medicine and Healthcare; Nonprofit Service; Real Estate; Sports, Wellness, and Fitness; Technology; Youth and Education; Mentor of the Year. The awards gala serves not only to commend individuals for their leadership and achievements, but more importantly, to raise money for Austin Sunshine Camps.

YMBL x AU40 Speaker Series?featuring Juan Miró Join us April 8 at the Austin Central Library for lunch and to hear from Juan Miró,?2004 AU40 Winner in Business & Entrepreneurship. Miró’s design work through Miró Rivera Architects has garnered over 100 awards, including the 2023 Texas Medal of Arts Award, and has been featured in leading publications such as Architectural Record, Architectural Digest, and The New York Times. He is also recognized for leading a grassroots effort in 2020 to ban windowless bedrooms in Austin, influencing critical local building policy.

Every year, the Austin Under 40 Awards honor a distinguished group of driven, innovative, and inspiring individuals, each with a unique story of success and impact. While the gala is a truly special evening, it is just the beginning—we hope to stay connected well beyond the event. To foster a lasting network, we have been working to provide our winners with a year-round community of peers, mentors, and partners.
