We just wrapped up our inaugural Austin AI Alliance State of AI in Austin event with about 140 people and companies, and the energy was off the charts. During my wrap-up, I held up a punch card (yes, I use them occasionally for notes), then a floppy disk, and finally a 256 billion byte SD card—just to show how quickly technology has evolved. AI technologies are evolving the same way. Ten years ago, you might have spent a few dollars to process a batch of images with a stateless model. Now, you can process tens of millions of tokens for a fraction of that cost. And you can run that image model for free, on a device that fits in your pocket. But here’s the twist: while inference is cheaper, the models themselves are getting bigger and more complex. Reasoning models are demanding more compute at runtime. So even though we’re more efficient at each step, the overall curve is still trending upward. It’s a great reminder that we really do live in the future—and what’s considered “cutting-edge” today may feel downright archaic in another decade. So - same parting thought - What’s the next punch-card-to-SD-card leap we’ll see in AI over the next few years?
