NUGS - NSW Underground Geotechnical Society are a first time sponsor of the AusIMM Sydney Student Chapter. Last week the first event of 2025 was held in Sydney. The Student Meets Industry night was a huge success, with over 140 people in the room ranging from students, academia, consultants and industry. A special thank you to Gaetano Venticinque, our Treasurer, for representing NUGS at the event and helping make this collaboration possible. NUGS are excited to continue supporting initiatives like this that bridge the gap between students and industry, empowering the next generation of mining leaders in the geotechnical field.

As 2024 comes to an end, and we begin the new year, we’d like to reflect and thank the sponsors and partners who supported us throughout the year. Last week, 10 mining engineering and geology students from the AusIMM Sydney Student Chapter were fortunate to attend a field trip to Cobar, in Central NSW. The trip offered a chance to explore two key mining operations in the region, Peak and CSA Mine. The trip began with a visit to Peak Mine with Aurelia Metals. We started with a tour of their engineering offices, before heading to the Fort Bourke lookout for a tour of the old open pit, where we discussed the history of the operation. We then headed underground, where students were taken on a tour through the full development cycle, including a detailed look at the jumbo drilling process. We also visited the charge-up operators to watch them charge some holes – a great opportunity for students to chat with the operators and ask them questions about their work. A highlight of the day was seeing the historic timber mine workings, and learning about the unique challenges this presents for mine planning and development. The next day we visited CSA Mine, hosted by Metals Acquisition Limited and known for being one of the deepest underground mines in the country. We began our long journey underground, where we toured the underground offices, workshops, and crusher - a first for many students on the trip. We also visited the longhole drill rig and diamond drillers where we asked questions and learned about their processes, sat in a refuge chamber, and visited one of CSA’s telehut remote bogging huts. Here, we witnessed remote-controlled bogging of a stope, experiencing some of the automation technology we often learn about in the classroom. Lunch with the CSA technical services team was a perfect close to the day, where students had the chance to sit down with geologists, geotechs, and mining engineers, who shared valuable insights – including some very passionate geologists who taught us a thing or two about the regional geology at the core sheds! A huge thank you to Keanu Sydney and the team at Aurelia Metals, and Gabe Dadi and the team at Metals Acquisition Limited for hosting us on such a fantastic trip. We had an amazing time, with countless questions answered, practical insights, and firsthand exposure to what a career in mining looks like day to day.
